I have a 91' Evinrude that has had the thermostats, and water pump replaced. Pee's very well and runs fine under 3500 rpm but over that for a short time will cause the alarm to go off and engine to go in to limp mode. Shut off engine restart and its fine unless you go above 3500 again? Could it just be the sensor is bad?

Re: overheat alarm

I have a 1989 175 hp evinrude that did the same thing. Replaced all of the easy components before finally getting steered in the right direction from the good folks on this forum. Apparently a very common problem, the water diverter tubes swell up and essentially create a dam in the cooling system. These tubes are very inexpensive but are a bit labor intensive to replace. You have to pull the heads off and they can be a bear to get out but with a little persistence it's really not that bad. I could have done it in a long afternoon had it not been for a broken bolt. Good luck!!

Re: overheat alarm

There are no water passage deflectors in the loopers, but there are no 130HP 1991 engines either.

What's the model number?

The problem is probably the thermostats or the thermostat seats. If it's a 1991 V4 looper, it could be the water control valve.
