Overheat Problem

1998 Bayliner 2355 with 5.7 L Freshater cooled.

Out yesterday and cruised for about 1 hour. Temp.
suddenly shot up and engine compartment was steaming with antifreeze. Once the smoke(Steam)had cleared it was apparent that hose that attaches (oveflow?) just below the heat exchanger cap had come off and antifreeze had sprayed everywhere. Let engine cool down and refilled heat exchanger with Antifreeze. Started her up and had a bit of a squeel that slowly dimished? I've looked at the hoses and can't see any splits/cracks/pinholes.
MY question is: Would the small hose coming off cause the antifreeze to spray out? Any thoughts on what the Squeeling is/was?

Re: Overheat Problem

I didn't see billows of steaming anti-freeze on Lake Washington yesterday, or I would have stopped and helped.

Re: Overheat Problem

Neither did I, just my steaming stomach from lack of sun screen :)

Was the engine still hot, squeel could have been your alarm??? I remember that sound from when I overheated last year.

Re: Overheat Problem

some more info about what drive you have will help (alpha has different water pump then bravo)

if there is a lack of fresh water to cool the heat exchanger it will blow off into the tank at some point like a car

tommays

Re: Overheat Problem

Whoops! :)I would think that it shouldn't come out at all under normal operating temp. What is the make of your drive? Did it over heat after you put the hose back on? Did you ever get to cruising speed after the event? If so did it overheat again? The squeal was most likely wet belts, that took awhile to dry off........JK

Re: Overheat Problem

Oop Sorry..........Alpha I Gen II (1998) drive. After the event it worked fine. My wife did expertly point out that I had checked the coolant level prior to going out and is determined to pin the blame on my reinstalling the cap incorrectly.
Perhaps, but I am pretty sure I put it back on right. The squeeling is likely the we belts as it did diminish as time went on. At any rate I'm now interested in changing out some of the ageing hoses. Any thoughts on a good supplier?

Thanks for your Help!
