thanks to all the post here i had the motor up and running well. i may have missed something in reassembly however as the overheat light came on after five minutes of one third throttle in open water. the engine did get hot, so the function of the the light/switch is not in question. it seems that at some time someone replaced the water inlet tube with their own version of the water inlet tube, what i have to work with is made of copper pipe. It looks to me that there is a about a six inch stub of 1/2 inch copper pipe attached to the powerhead with a pretty jagged end facing down. Into this is slid a piece if 3/8 inch copper pipe that is then adapted to 1/2 inch copper pipe. this is slid into the grommet in the water pump. approx. 4 inches of the 3/8 copper pipe will slide into the stub up near the power head and my question is this: is this a workable design ? i think that in my reassembly i may have neglected to seat the tube in the water pump firmly and assumed that it was in deep enough when i tightened the lower unit to the housing. After i allowed the motor to cool off for awhile, it restarted and ran fine but no water was coming out of the exhaust hole as it had been when i ran it in the test tank. my plan is to pull it apart check everything i did (including the impeller), reassemble it and run it in the big 50 gal barrel again. How long and at what speed can i run it in the barrel ? the manual says to run at idle speed only when in a tank and i dont know how much of a true of a test that is ? i will pull the thermostat hoses off to check for water flow.

Alittle....do as the manual suggests. Only idle speed. This is more than enough to tell you what you need to know about the water pump.

If it was me, I'd be trying to locate the correct water tube for the engine and replace it. May be a big pain but then you know you have it right.

You can also pull the t-stats and run it. If she stays cool, then the t-stats need replaced. If it still gets hot, then either the impeller was assembled wrong or the water flow is not making it to the head.

Thanks.
