My OMC overheated yesterday on the river. As we were cruising up-river probably about 10 miles into the trip I noticed a burning smell, turn around and saw some smoke coming from engine. The temp gage was pegged over 250 degrees. After a while the engine cooled down and we were able to get to started, but it was hard to start.
The engineer quickly over-heated again. I noticed water was being pumped out the prop so the impeller was working, but also water was pumped out this hole in the side (see picture). I don't remember seeing water pumped out that hole in the side in the past. The other side of the drive is has a sticker in the same place, which I guess is covering a plug. I am speculating that water is not getting to the engine to cool due to that hole is missing a plug.
So, does anybody know what that hole is there for, and is it supposed to be closed? I am speculating the hole is there to drain the water out of the unit to winterize the boat? I had it winterized last year, and perhaps they forgot to put the plug back?
We ended up being towed back to dock by a friendly boater. This is my second year owning this boat
Thanks
