Overheat ... where to begin?

I have a 350 GM Motor and SP Volvo Penta Outdrive. The outdrive is original from 1993. Boat is 23se wellcraft excel. The motor was replaced in 2004 with a new GM crate engine. A Crate Engine is very simular to the original engine. I purchased the boat 3 yrs ago and have been learning/piecing together info ever since. I know that my exhaust manifolds are getting close to needing replacement as my mechcanic told me to keep an eye on them 2yrs ago after I paid him to fix a bunch of other things he said I absolutly needed..ie bellows, u joint, power steering cooler, shift cable, battery, spark plugs,...the list goes on.. I inspected removed port side manifold and riser 1yr ago and it looked marginal from what I could gather. The boat is only run in salt water but is stored on a trailer and flushed with fresh water after every use.

After my last trip engine temp was normal until I went to flush engine at idle RPM only. During the flush overheat occured. The next day reflushed at idle RPM only with outdrive fully submerged and overheat occured again so shut down. I inspected impeller and it was in perfect condition (I had just replaced impeller prior to my trip - (It is the correct impeller)). Both risers felt extremly hot but impeller housing felt cool. Also, my port exhaust seemed to spitting out much less water than normal.

As this overheat happen all of the sudden at idle RPM and not over a long period or at high RPM could it be possible my manifolds/risers/hoses just need to be replaced? Anyone ever see a manifold fail in these circumstances?

Here is my plan of action but I am looking for any advice at this point...
1) remove spark plug to see water come out of cylinders. (Hopefully not)
2) pressure test cylinders
What else would be a good simple test, inspection, observation at this point?

I am at a cross roads as on the one hand I want to go buy a new set of manifolds, risers, & hoses put back together and hope the problem goes away. On the other hand if my engine is totally fubar I need to know before investing additional time &or money.

Is it possible the circulation pump has died? Any water in your engine oil?

When manifolds and risers are restricted usually overheating occurs at high rpms and then cool down at idle. Since you changed the impeller the first thing to check is the thermostat.

Re: Overheat ... where to begin?

Menard6666, I am not thinking the water circulation pump has died since the pump is connected directly to the drive shaft. Oil level remains the same so I don't think there is water in oil but I will check again.

Seaman, I will research how to check the themostat and include that on my list of things to check. I get back to you if I come up with questions on how to check it.
