Justed overheated my merc 30 hp because a wasp had decided to make a mud nest in my water outlet at the top of leg.The tell tail was working fine at the time.Any way about 30 seconds of running it stopped and I noticed the head was smoking but not to the point of burning the paint off.I took the thermomstat out and removed the wasp nest and started the motor. It ran fine and upon measuring my compression it was the same before I overheated it.
Question I have is should I have replace the rings and rehone the bore as it slighty scored and glazed a bit?
Gee these outboards run hot as I have another one and it too runs hot but only the outlet at the top of the leg.The tell tail is rather cool.Perhaps I should remove the thermostat altogether?

regards andrew

30 seconds may not be long enough to have caused any severe damage, what is the compression like after the fix?
