Overheated Exhaust

I had to be towed in last week because of what seemed like an rubber fire problem. Lot's of smoke. Smelled electrical.
When I had a better chance to inspect the engine, it turns out the the rubber parts on the starboard exhaust started to melt. The engine was running when I shut it down. Now the engine turns over hard and will not start. The exhaust must have gotten very hot, melted rubber and paint all the way to the back of the engine. The port side looks fine. The coolant temp gauge was normal when I shut it down.
I've had the boat 2 years. Don't know when/if the manifold and risers were replaced. I changed the impeller 10...15 hours ago. Haven't had a chance to check it yet.

I have the necessary skills to replace all of the parts, manifold, risers, flapper valve, etc.

I assume the manifold/riser failed. I'm curious to know why the exhaust got so hot.

Re: Overheated Exhaust

Those rubber hoses melt and burn when no water is getting thru the exhaust manifolds and risers.
I would sure be pulling the risers and inspecting for plugged conditions. You may have gotten some water in the engine after shut down.
I would sure get it started (Even with no water) just to get the salt water out of the cylinders before even messing with the exhaust. Pull the spark plugs and check for water. Since you say SALT WATER COOLED, you have hours to get the water out of the cylinders, not days.

Re: Overheated Exhaust

I'll pull the plugs and spin the engine this afternoon. Squirting a little oil on the cylinders probably wouldn't hurt either. Hopefully there is no internal damage and it starts.

Next question. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to purchase the new exhaust parts? I live in southern Calif.

Re: Overheated Exhaust

If you have been ingesting some sand you could have complpetely clogged the manifold and/or riser. check both before ordering parts.
