I just found the problem , I posted my 302 ford with pre alpha merc drive was running hot about 3 weeks ago, it was a failing water pump.
The mechanic installed it, so I thought something else was wrong, when I asked him why it failed he said you must have run over a bag but I dont agree,
Now I have to put the new one in myself
I'm going to back flush the raw water side and test it in a garbage can before i put it into the water again.

Re: overheating 302

There's ony one way to burn up a pump. Starve it of water. Plastic bag over the water intakes can do it. Weeds over the water intakes can do it. Algae growing over the water intakes can do it. Running the motor out of the water without muffs Will do it. Muffs can slip off the intakes and that can do it too. Chose one.

It's highly doubtful that the mechanic would be at fault. Especially if the water pump worked when you got it back from him. But it's one of those items that is not generally guaranteed to last because nobody working them has any control of what happens once the boat is back in the hands of the owner. If you find that it was improperly installed, that's a different story.

I recall one customer that had his water pump done and before he hitched the trailer to his car out on the lot, he started the motor and revved it for a few minutes. I guess he wanted to make sure the stupid mechanic didn't do something to keep his boat from running. So much for his new water pump. It was thouroughly cooked well before the first minute passed.
