ok, so i bought a 2001 mariah diablo 180 with a 3.0 volvo penta gs, sx-m outdrive that sat for 10 years.
just put a new motor in, and ran it on the hose and everything is great
once in the water it wants to overheat
so after doing a little diagnosis i took the outlet hose off of the raw water pump and there is no water, so i immediately think the impeller is shot, but its still perfect.
next test, remove the inlet hose off the raw water pump and put it in a bucket of water, voila it pumps water. so clearly the raw water pump isnt the issue.
keep in mind i'm sitting in the middle of a lake doing all this.
next we pull the inlet hose off from behind the motor at the transom, and that portion is under water so water is flooding in, mind you not fast, so it seems like there is water there.
so the pump pumps, but the water doesn't water.
at a loss on the water so i loaded the boat on the trailer and got home. now im thinking a blockage in the water supply chain leading from the outdrive screens up into transom water supply hose, so i hook the garden hose up backwards starting right at the raw water pump to flush out the lines in the outdrive, but suprise suprise there is water flooding out. and it appears its only flushing out of the intake screens and the 4 small holes where a hydrofoil would go(not actually sure what those holes are for)
so while trying to do some more research once i get home, im reading things about possible leaks in the passage starting from the intake screen, to the transom. but how would that affect water not going thru. like i could see it being like drinking thru a straw that has a hole in it if it were able to suck in air, but if that entire unit is fully submerged in water, why would a leak hurt anything.
the only other thing i could see is one of those hoses collapsing. but i dont know which of any of the hoses would be able to collapse.
any insight or help would be appreciate.... unless its advice comparable to what my wife gave while we're paddling the boat back to shore. "are you sure the voltage isnt too low??" thanks hun ill check that right away!!
i tried posting this in volvo penta forum too but you guys get way more traffic here and the motor is identical. gm 3.0
