I recently picked up a used boat with a 1995 model year Force 70 hanging on it, I used it 5 times now, and the last time the overheating buzzer alarm sounded, So I checked the pisser and it was pissing water, So I am thinking that the impeller is good??? I am a newbie to outboard motors, but am a automobile mechanic, So I am wondering does this motor have any known problems that cause it to overheat, and if it has a Thermostat????? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also, I would like to be able to more closely monitor the temp of the motor, is there a water temp gauge that can be put on this motor????? Thanks in advance everyone!!!!!!!

Re: Overheating Force 70hp

Welcome to iboats and boating.

It is possable that the impeller isn't pumping enough water to cool the engine, the thermostat isn't opening, a restriction in the block or exaust port, or the temp sender is failing.
The temp sender grounds out the wire attached to it, thus completing the circuit of the buzzer.
Take your fingertips on a warm engine, and breifly touch the side of the block by the head,in several areas (high and low cylinders). If you can hold your finger on the block for a 3 secoond count, suspect the temp sender,or it's wire shorting to ground.
A mechanic's next approach to your problem would be to change-out the impeller and tstat just because.
The impellers in most outboards are only good for a season or two, and should be replaced anyhoo, just because they are due.
Yes, your engine can be equipped with a temp gauge. They can be purchased here, or at any marine store. The block has an allen head threaded plug in the top,by the head. This is where you would attach the sender for the gauge.

Re: Overheating Force 70hp

The impeller is located at the top of the head in it's own housing.

Moose is right on. They wear out as fast or faster than a fan belt on your car. Add to this, the fact that they will form a shape to the pump housing over time, and then when you start it up, the impeller doesn't pump in idle very well.
You would be wise to check all the other "routine mainainence" items,
such as lower unit lube inspection to look for low lube, water contamination,or gear wear.
This is done by draining the lube into a pan,and running your finger thru it to feels for chunks of metal.
Use new gaskets when you refill the lower unit.
Decarb cleaning is also recommended. It frees-up stuck rings, and should be done every 60hours normal operation, sooner for heavy idling.
Read read read the posts here. It's full of great info on maintaining your boat, motor and trailer.
Have fun ,and take a safe-boating course if you have never had the pleasure of owning a boat before. Here is a Florids-based site on safe boating...But these principles of safety are universal.

http://www.boatsafe.com/Florida/
