Overheating from sand being sucked up?

I have a 1995 Johnson 130hp (J130TXAOP).I hit a sand bar going just a little more than Idle last weekend.I was where I wanted to be so I shut the motor off.Later I started to head back down river at a little over idle and my alarm buzzer goes off.I still had a good stream out of the telltale.I shut it off and pull the hood.Let it cool down then started it this time get it on plane thinking I would blow it out.I got about another mile down river and the buzzer goes off.I bring it home and pulled the T-stats and lower unit flushed it out with garden hose both directions. There was alot of sand on the ground afterwards.I also checked the water pump looked great.Put it back together go to lake and the buzzer goes off again.Pulled hood and it felt pretty warm so I think the temperature switch is working.
I am trying get my hands on a thermal scanner or whatever you call em.I also ordered some new T-stats.So what is next pull the heads? How hard is it to pull the heads?I suppose I need to order a set of head gaskets.I am worried about the bolts being corroded.Any advice on getting the head bolts out if they are corroded?I have been reading a bunch of threads on here about similar problems.I have read about some engines having reflectors or something like that but I do not see them in the parts breakdown for my engine.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Jeff, did you test the thermostats when you had them out? Sand can get into the valve assembly and make them get stuck.

You will have to pull the heads to check the water deflectors. Firstly though I would change out the impeller. I have a thread somewhere with what happened to my one season old one. I will post a link if I find it.

I did not test them but I did clean them off. They are different than normal thermostats they are called vernatherm maybe. You proly already know that but I did not see anywhere for sand to hide in those T-stats.
Thanks,Jeff

Don't worry about the "reflectors" (actually called deflectors) on your mtr. They were only on the cross flow mtrs. Try taking the thermostat covers and thermos out, putting muffs on it and start it up and see what comes out.

Kenmyfam,
I checked the impeller and housing it looked fine to me.It appears to be pumping water out of the tell tale just as it did before.I am going too order head gaskets so I will proly get a new water pump kit also. Can sand mess up the temp switches?

I took the T-stats out again and there was more sand in there.I flushed it again.Ran it on muffs with t-stats out.I then took it to a friends pond and left it on the trailer ran it in gear for about 10 minutes.I am going to take it to the lake Saturday morning and try running it.I don't think it is fixed but before I mess with taking the heads off I want to see if maybe I got lucky.Any other ideas?

Did you have the t-stats out and covers off when you ran it in the pond ? If you did take the hood off, and give it a little high rpm run in the lake. You said your W/P looked good so maybe you'll flush any sand out of it that you still may have. On the lake test make sure the t-stats are out and covers are off but don't run it to long.

Looks can be deceiving.
