Overheating....Maybe???

'89 5.7 Alpha One - 218 hours<br />Sunday, after running engine for 10-15 minutes planed and moving along, I slowed to an idle, happened to look at the temp guage and it was maxed hot and seemed but the needle was irratic...sort of jumping back and forth, like maybe something was shorting. Switched the engine off and felt the engine. I could lay my hand on the manifolds for 1-2 seconds. I didn't perceive it to be overheated. No steam, smoke, power loss, pinging or any evidence of overheating. I re-started and idled along and decided it was a false guage reading from an electrical problem. Then the kicker....then the temp guage (over about 5 minutes of idling along) started to gradually climb to the half way point (it never runs that hot). The oil pressure never got into the red zone, but always runs pretty close to it at idle. The water pump impeller is about 2 years old (I know I should replace soon). Monday, I ran all day long with NO PROBLEMS???? Any ideas? Don't know if it's related, but during the time it was acting up, on 2-3 occasions when turning the key to start, there was just a click, as if the solinoid was sticking. Then the next time it would start normally. Sorry for the length of this post, just hoping someone can help. Thanks

could be a faulty ground -- think I would begin at the starter switch and make sure all ground connections are tight. (hesitate to say it's electrical, of course, because bad things happen if the engine is really overheating -- but there is a hint that you may have a ground fault somewhere based on the erratic gauge reading(s) and the issue with the ignition/start switch.)

Check for good ground between thermostat housing and block. The temp sender should be in the thermo housing, and this housing uses a grounding tab on the gasket, if aftermarket gasket was used temp sensor and housing may not have good ground.

Thanks guys. A loose ground does make sense. Never thought about the thermostat housing either. Thanks again
