Ok so I had a bad day at the lake yesterday. It was one thing after another. First my crank handle breaks. Second forgot to put the plug in the back of the boat luckily made it back and loaded it before sinking the boat. Well after all that I put the plug on and went out on the water. Starts cutting out at full throttle and I look at the temp gauge and it state around 230. So I shut it off and let it cool down. Then went back and loaded it up. Went to a marine store and bought an impeller kit. By the way I have a 94 four winns with an omc cobra 5.0 and cobra out drive. So after buying an impeller kit to back to the boat to try to fix it cause the lake is about 90 miles from home and it was still early and wanted to have a good time. The impeller kit they gave me was for an omc cobra but I found out the impeller is not on my out drive. So I guess I have a sea pump style one? It's on the engine under the alternator. I can't seem to find an impeller kit for an omc cobra sea pump style one. Also I comety removed the thermostat since it was really corroded. Pulled the sea pump off also and checked the impeller and it looked fine. So put it all back together. Went back on the water and same thing starts getting hot. So shut it off floated and swam around the boat and hung out with the friends. We end it up loading it up a couple hours later and going home. Now that I'm home I would like to know were or how to start diagnosing the over heating. How do I try to back purge it or were do I hook up a water hose to my engine. Thanks again guys.

Howdy,,

Welcome aboard!

Well, as you can see from the above we would still need more info. Boat model is not a lot of help. Engine model (serial for a Merc) tells us what you have since your engine/drive could easily be a 1993 model and they offered the Cone and dog clutch models in 93.

If yours is a cone clutch model, and you have an engine mounted raw water pump, it'll be different from the drive mounted model.

Since your boat is a 94 (new 19 years ago) someone could have put many different engines and drives in it in the last19 years........(my 87 Four Winns has a 1997 Merc engine/drive and came new with a 1987 OMC Cobra)

If your impeller has failed (and disintegrated) you'll need to find the big pieces to ensure that they're not plugging something up down stream of the pump.

Re: Overheating need help we're to start

a model number would be good to verify, but this is the kit for belt driven pump on a 94 5.0 if the model starts with 50FA (basically the 50FA models are Volvo Penta branded OMC joint venture product, so a Volvo dealer will generally be able to source the same parts by same number)
3854287 WATER PUMP REPAIR KIT and that's avail at any Evinrude dealer.

If the impeller was fine, you might look for an air leak along the suction side of the pump - a pump will choose to suck air before water if given the choice.

Were the vee belts all wet from the bilge being flooded/ no plug. Maybe the belts were just slipping.

Yes the belts did get very wet but they did not sound as they were slipping. Like a normal car will squeal should these do the same when slipping? The serial number on the drive is t0787018 model # 3868076. Engine is model #50facpmda and serial # is t01272151 hopefully that helps. Engine cover says omc cobra 5.0 ecu multi port fuel injection and looks to be a ford style 5.0

car belts squeal when they're loose... wet them down and they *can* get real quiet.. hard to say - that was a long shot, but it might not have to slip a whole lot to start overheating.

and the w/p kit above is correct for yours

you can go to shop.evinrude.com and access all the parts books, with prices and availability for your setup under parts/ stern drive/ then year and 5, and then you'll see your model there.
And again, many of your part numbers will also work in the Volvo Penta parts system.
