Overheating problem?

Question? my '88, 150-hp Evinrude was overheating, so I changed the water pump and housing assembly with an after market brand recommended by B&F Marine in Miami. After replacing it, the motor still overheats, not at idle, but at higher RPM's. I replaced the deflectors, the thermostats and cleaned all the water channels, including the heads and he still overheats, I took of the elements from the thermostats and installed them back on, and he still overheats. Also, I notice that water is coming out or leaking from somewhere inside the lower unit, something that was not happening before I replaced the old waterpump, I've done this job myself before and I never had a leaking problem before, specially after using "sealant 1000" from OMC on all seals on this new water pump assembly. So first of all, could this leak be due to the fact that I am using an after market product or not?, secondly, why is my motor still overheating after I've done all of this to it? I am having a very difficult time with this problem, can any body give me some advise on what the problem could be. Thanks.

Re: Overheating problem?

Did you replace the o-ring between the impeller cup and waterpump housing? New Omc waterpump kit has inproved housing and impeller. Two causes of high RPM overheat water deflectors, and the above o-ring.

Clanton, yes I did replaced both o-rings, the one that goes on top of the impeller and the one between the cup and the housing, and I also did replaced all of the deflectors. Any more suggestions guys. Really need some help here. Thanks.

Since you are in Miami, it's possible you may have a saltwater corrosion/crud buildup in your motor and are not getting enough circulation and heat exchange to the cooling water. A product called Salt Away has worked to clean up mine and, even if it dosn't cure your problem, it certainly won't hurt. If you're sure water pump, etc. is all OK, you may want to give it a try.

You could remove the thermostat housings, start engine in water, you should have a gusher from each head of clear water, at about 2500 rpms, if not back to the water pump. Did you remove the water covers from the head and check the passages?

Re: Overheating problem?

Leaking between the lower unit and midsection is common & and amy not be a factor in your overheating problem. The midsection is normally filled with water (water jacket around the exhaust). When putting the lower unit back on, you can put a little sealant on at the joint, but unless it's a huge leak it's just cosmetic.
