Hi,

I have 5.0GL PWTR Volvo Penta SX Drive, that has an overheating issue, that I cannot figure out. Here is what is going on:

First strated overheating in Idle, and would cool while driving. It was an air leak, the boat place fixed it and also said that my upper seal was bad and replaced that as well...$900.00 later I get the boat back and now I am using a 160 degree thermostat that is new, the boat idles at 150 degree but when I am going about 3000 rpm, the temperature continues to rise up to at least 200 degrees, before I stop and let it idle back to normal. If I go full throttle it doesnt get over 180 degrees...I have flushed the system, checked the oil cooler and everything else seems to be working...Has anyone had this issue before? and what would cause this to do this? Could it be the sea pump leak?

Anyone with info would be much appreciated...

There is a stainless or copper tube that goes between the upper gear housing and the lower unit. The tube fits into a rubber grommet in the lower unit. If that grommet get pushed out of place during assembly, it will suck air when on plane. At idle or no wake speed the tube is under water and it sucks water normally. On plane, it's out of the water. At wide open throttle, water is forced up from the pickups and cools the engine.

I have never dropped the lower unit myself, is it something I can do or is it something that I have to take in? the shop that I just took the boat too, replaced my upper seal cause they said it was leaking. My boat never did this before until I brought it too them. I prefer not to take it back to them. I will however take it to a different shop if need be.

Let me know.

Thanks.

Okay, my boat is in shop pulling lower unit to check the seals...I will keep you updated...probably going back to a 140degree thermostat on a carb engine....especially being in AZ with the heat...

Hi,

Yes I had a mechanic pull my lower unit and their is a grommet that goes over the copper tube between the lower and upper unit. It was cracked in half. They replaced that plus a couple other O rings in the unit, put it back together and it ran like a champ. It should only cost a couple hundred to have someone drop the unit and change out. If that is the only problem.
