I have a 1990 4.3V6 in a Cobalt. we were running it most of the day and the temp gauge was about 140. and running good. Stopped and took a break, got gas and then went back out, got into some weeds, and then it started overheating to about 230. shut it off, jumped in the water and all the weeds were off at that point.. checked the thermostat and it doesn't seem stuck, and the neighbor guy who has a Volvo outboard and on those, they have a brass canister with a screen filter inside, and he said that all that needs to be done is take the filter off and clean the screen.. but on the Merc cruiser, I don't know where it is as this boat is new to me this year, or is there another place the weeds could be plugging the engine as I have always ran a outboard until this year.
Please reply if you can help me in anyway,
Thanks, Gundy

Re: overheating

I think you need to disconnect the hose to the water pump, throw some ears on the outdrive and fire it up. See if it's pumping water. If not, at least the blockage is in the outdrive.. yank the lower unit, check/replace the pump.

Blow some compressed air in the top hose while the lower is off.. blow out any crap that might be in that small 5/8 tube.

Good luck.

-- Joe
