ox 66 vst gasket/o ring

I'm replacing the vst filter on my 1999 225 SWS ox 66. I've done it before and have always struggled with the formed gasket as they seem to swell, so this year I bought a new one. I'm having more trouble than ever getting the gasket to sit in the bottom portion of the tank. Of course I tossed the old one already. Any thoughts?

pack the groove in the tank with vasoline,install the packing, reassemble the VST and go play.

After applying the vasoline, it took about 3 minutes to install and seal tank.
