Oxidization & Patch Removal

Hi,

New to this forum. Anyway, I have an older Fibreglass bass boat that looks like it had a few repairs done on the side before I purchased it. The patches look like a new gel coat whereas the rest of my boat is pretty oxidized.

This makes the patches really noticable and I want to get the boat looking really nice again without paying a fortune.

Ive tried a few rubbiing compunds etc but havnt had any luck.

Does anyone have any products / applications that could work? I have attached a few pics to this thread.

Welcome to iboats.

I doubt you will be able to blend those patches in. I think you are either going to have to gel coat or paint everything.

I would think the repair probably blended quite well when it was first done. You can probably get it to come close again though hard to say from here. The last poster may be right to suggest it would have to be either painted or regelcoated.

In anycase, do a search on the forums for Gelcoat repair. There will be lots of tips there. Seems the most prevalent is wet sanding with 1000 grit paper and then buffing it with a highspeed circular buffer using rubbing compound.

I've sanded my '70 vintage boat with 1000grit and the shine came right back.

I searched this forum and found a guy a talking about using Comet with scouring pads, then rubbing compund, the polishing compound and then wax.

So I decided I would try that out and I am very satified with the resuts.

You can slighly see 1 patch but the rest are completly gone and the one is very hard to see.

Made my Gel coat look like new again.
