'87 Evinrude V4 90hp E90tlcur.

Thought I'd pick up a set of new washers/o-rings for the drain and top plug of the lower unit. My top plug only has a nylon washer on it and the bottom plug with magnet only has a rubber o-ring. The parts schematic appears to only show one or the other on each plug but the part number chart lists both the nylon washer and the o-ring part number for each plug. Is each plug supposed to have both the white nylon washer and black rubber o-ring? (This may sound trivial but it's bugging me.)

By the way, part numbers I see are 311598 for nylon and 333572 for o-ring.

Thanks,

Mark
Mpls, MN

I would GUESS that it's just supposed to have the Nylon washser. I don't ever recall seeing an O-ring on them. I would say if the Nylon washer isn't sealing it up you could try the o-ring and I think either one should work fine.
I'm just guessing though. -B-

I also have the magnetic plugs with the o- ring.

I think they are after-market parts. I bought the same ones (but different threads) for my Merc alpha drive.

They will have an o-ring or a gasket/washer, but not both.

If the plug sealing surface has a groove cut in it, use an o-ring. If it's flat (like a normal screw), use the nylon washer. Do not use both.

Hope this helps!

Re: P/N washer and o-ring on file/drain plugs

Thanks everyone who responded. Figured somebody might want to know the following info I just got from the dealer.

I'm told they have on hand both the nylon washer and o-ring, and I can go the old way if I want, using my old slotted magnet screw with o-ring on fill/drain hole. Apparently though Evinrude also offers a new magnet replacement screw with allen head that uses nylon washer for fill/drain hole. Guys were tightening the crap out of the slotted screw with rubber o-ring, squashing the o-ring into the slot of the screw head so that they would end up metal screw against metal lower unit. Made it hard to get screw out later. This nylon washer and allen head magnet screw are supposed to prevent metal/metal contact. Dealer said though that you still just have to "snug up" new allen screw as the allen part is only about 1/8 inch size and can strip if your not careful.

I think I'm going to stick with my slotted magnet screw as I can always hit it with an impact slotted screwdriver if would ever need to. Another good argument for using torque specs on the screw as well.

Mark
Mpls, MN
