I bought a HVLP Paint gun from harbor freight (item number 66222) the other day and i just noticed it says "stainless steel needle and tip for use with most water-based finishes" i'm guessing i bought the wrong gun ?? i was planning on using an oil based paint for my boat what makes this gun "water based" and not "oil based" ?? here is a link to it http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?itemnumber=66222&Submit=Go any help is greatly appreciated thanks Jason

Re: paint gun

Most all automotive paints and cabinet finishes are low VOC and water based. It's the law in California. I don't know if you can get a differnt tip and needle for that gun or not. My Porter Cable HVLP came with a set of 3 tip inserts and needles.

I agree with ondarvr. There's no way they mean latex water based house paint for that type of gun.

I've sprayed a whole slew of finishes with that exact gun; lacquer, waterbased paint/clear and oil based paint. The gun worked great for everything, the only trick is to thin out your material so it atomizes properly.

Same here, I bought a pair of them to try and have shot everything from primer to auto finishes to industrial coating. They only state that it's got a stainless tip since most older guns don't and they tend to get rusty when using water based Low VOC paints.

For the money, that's not a bad gun at all.

I bought a pair of them to try

Funny, I bought one to try out and then picked up another since I didn't want to be stuck if the first one carpped out, but they have both been working fine.

One thing (annoyance) I found is the packing nut behind the trigger likes to back itself out,,, and then the gun will not deliver enough material, a small drop of Lock-tite solved the problem.

Oh yeah, I sprayed 4 gallons of spray grade contact cement with the gun too...

Re: paint gun

Most auto finished are going water based, as stated won't make a difference, there are a ton of adjustments on the gun to acount for any situation.

Find some thing old to test shoot before you start painting to make sure you have your flow and fan set right, should be fine.

Thats the reason they state its for water based paints. Like everyone else, I've used the same guns for epoxies, polyurethanes, water based oil etc. Just get enough to practice on amout to thin and nozzle adjustments.
