240 grit wet/dry paper used wet makes a good surface prep though you might want to go as high as 400 for between coat sanding. Most of the 2-part paints can be applied with a roller successfully when proper reducer is used with them.

Thom

Re: paint my boat

Sylvain,
It is a very time consuming and effort taking job to prepare surface for the paint job to look good. I painted my boat last season. What I thought should have been a weekend project turned out to be a good 4 weekends - 8 solid work days.
First, depending on condition of your existing gelcoat consider restoring existing gelcoat at all costs. If it is scratched deep, patch it and blend in color. I would awoid painting if your gelcoat is restorable. Lite colors gelcoat is easier to restore. If yours is a dark color it is almost imposible to bring it back to shine. Mine was red and I tried to restore by sending with light grid sand paper and polish. It did not work out, so I painted the boat blue.

Preparation:
I used Introlux 2 part filler to fill in deep scratches and cracks. Started sanding with 150 grid paper using orbital sander. You would need to get gelcoat to "orange peel" stage. This is important for primer to properly catch to the surface. Tack cloth and Acetone is very important before you are ready to primer.
I user Introlux "Under Coat" or UnderKot" (not sure of exact name) primer. After primer was dry I sanded with 220 grid paper to make the surface smooth. this is the time you want to spend most of your effort preparing her for paint job.
After the first coat let it dry as directed on the paint can. If it says 24 hours to dry, do not touch it before that time. Once dry I used 500 dry paper on the foam poliching wheel. This is where I stoped using orbital and did all by hand.
After second coat wet sand it with 500 grid. I did 3 coats of paint total. After last coat wet send 1000 grid. It looked good at this point but not as smooth as a new finish. Polishing with heavy compound will give you best result.

Now this is where the catch is: ;)
A friend of mine is a pro painter but paints wood cabinets not boats or cars. We used a professional spray gun to get the job done.

You will however get same result by "roll and brush" technic.
If you are using Introlux paint use solvant that is suggested in the directions. I think it is Introlux 215 or 203 Solvant.
I know Introlux would be good for roll/brush method because I started this way and primed with roller. You should get a pro quality natural soft bristle brush. 4 inch brush is good.
When you doing primer step practice this method during this time. That will get you practice for the paint application.

This is how it's done:
Roll paint on the surface vertically I have done a section of about 3 feet at a time. Dip the fine bristle brush into solvant and apply in horizontal strikes. It will feel as if you are stratching the paint. This will make it look smoother rightaway.
When the painted sections are connected, brush the solvant onto the earlier section, so that the connecting spot would not be visible.

Oh, and to your question about cold time. This paint needs at least 50 degrees. The colder it is the longer it will take for the paint to set.

Good luck!!!
Lenny

Re: paint my boat

To get a good finish you need a soft wide brush (or a foam brush) as well as the roller, then use the "roll and tip" method.
First apply the paint with the roller, using a short nap foam sleeve for gloss paint, then following closely behind with the brush just drag it VERY gently across the wet paint, enough to burst the bubbles but not make brush marks. It's best to get a helper to do the brushing, then you can concentrate on rolling and you'll get a better more even finish. You'll need to apply two or three coats of gloss.
If you have bubbles in the paint and you've let it dry you'll need to sand them out before you start applying fresh paint.

Re: paint my boat

The problem may be the 2 pack paint, sometimes it cures too quickly for roller application, spraying may be a better option in this instance and if you have the equipment you may as well use it. I've had better results rolling single pack paints which dry a bit slower, this allows any brush marks to settle out, unfortunately it also allows more time for flies and dust to settle on the paintwork!

Sylvain
Electric gun is good for painting your house door, a fence and building wallls. You need a professional spray gun that has a pressure
build-up in it. While painting with a pro sprayn d an opportunity to air dry sertain spots of surface while painting. I don't think you will get a nice finish with electric gun. Wet sanding with 1000 grid paper followed by olishing compound will make your paint glossy.

Let us now your progress.
Lenny

Re: paint my boat

I don't know Lenny, I've seen some pretty good finishes achieved with an electric sprayer. I was surprised, as a user of "proper" spray equipment I wouldn't have thought an electric sprayer would do a good job, but I have to admit I was wrong. I believe the good results I saw were all done using single pack paint though which dries relatively slowly, 2 pack may not be so successful but is probably worth a try.

Re: paint my boat

petrolhead,
Even the worse paint finish could be improved by wet sanding with the finest grid paper. When I finished painting my boat, second coat looked like an orange peel. I kept on sanding it to smooth it out. In some very rough spots I took all the paint off to the primer. These spots were blended and the whole thing was painted over again.

I have seen a paint job from the $80 bucks Home Depot electric sprayer. It does not give you constant equal spray. It is just my opinion that a rented pro gun will give you much better result then buying an electric.
Paint I have used was a 1 part "Interlux Brightside Polyurethane".
