Paint options

Hello. I am pulling out the carpet in my boat this weekend and replacing it with vinyl. There is also some carpet on the sides of the boat that I was hoping to paint instead of using vinyl. Do you have any suggestions on what type of paint to use? From the small area I removed it looks like it is fiberglass underneath but is really rough. I want something that will end up smooth and is thick enough to cover well.

This is my first time doing anything like this so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Paint options

If it had carpet on it, more then likely it has fuzz from the backing or has glue. I would sand to make sure you get good adhesion and also to get things smooth. (60 grit followed by 200 grit should work)

From there it depends on what you are going for. Interlux, specifically Brightside, sells a variety of paints that work well and they are pretty easy for the beginner. Usually Marine Wholesale or Jamestown Distributors sells it cheaper than other places.

A little advice: don't go for gloss if inside, made that mistake before, and my eyes are still watering.

Take it on down to the truck bed spray liner place? No sanding, comes out nice and smooth, tough and soft.
