Re: paint?

How is the paint currently on the boat holding up?? I ask because I think that paint is going to bond better to the paint you've got than it will to bare aluminum.

If it were me, and I plan to do this with my little aluminum boat once the weather gets back to the 60's, I would very lightly sand the boat to "rough" up the paint thats on there and knock off anything thats loose. I would then find any areas of bare aluminum(if any) and etch it with a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. The aluminum oxides as soon as it contacts the air, which is why it doesnt rust. Maybe go over it with a little acetone if need be, and then paint it with some Rustoleum thats designed for metal. I personaly would prime it first depending on how much bare metal you have showing.....JMHO. I'm sure others have some ideas as well

Re: paint?

scuff the paint with some wet sandpaper, don't leave any paint untouched. I personally would shoot a coat of good quality primer on first, but this is not necessary.
