Looking for information on painting a boat. I have a used 1990 Regal Majestic 210 Cuddy. The paint looks like it may need a new coat... Whats the best way to do this?? Any ideas or tips would be great

tallman,

Is the boat fiberglass? Are you talking about bottom paint or all over?

oops sorry I guess all that would help...
Yes the boat is fiberglass and I am talking right now at least of just painting the bottom. Right now it has a black layer at the very bottom that is sort of like anti skid paint or something... Kind of wierd... ANy thoughts on that... How do I get it off??? Whats the best way to paint??? What are the best products??

Thanks

Black paint at the bottom is anti-fouling paint, to stop little plants and growth from dragging your hull and slowing it down.

Usually done when the boat sits in the water for the whole season/year.

You can sandblast it off or use some kind of paint remover, however if it is smooth and clean (no growth) then it might still be effective, or otherwise just in need of a new layer. This paint is not for looks, just for effectiveness. It should go up to the waterline of the boat sitting at the dock with a normal load.

El cheapo bottom paint will work, but for high performance you can look the super slick teflon paints ($$$) since the smoother and slicker the bottom, the better your performance/mileage. Do check first though how it will cope with the paint there is now.

Most marine shops will have detailed brochures from the paint manufacturors about their products. An example would be the International line of paints.

PS - usually these paints are poisonous. Do not get it on your skin or eyes and do not breath the sanding dust. If you are going to sand it smooth and possibly repaint, wet-sand it so the dust doesn't fly off. Etc :)

Are you sure you have "black paint" on the bottom???? Get some Simple Green Cleaner and a mild green abrasive pad and give it a scrub in one area.

You might find that the black paint at the bottom is neglected lake pollution that has dried. I had the exact same thing when I purchased my used boat. It had a funny look and it was thick all it turned out to be was YEARS and YEARS of neglect.

Removing all that mess totaled allot of hours of scrubbing with simple green and then polishing with 3m Hull and Fiberglass cleaner. However, I have a nice clean polished surface now.

Give it a try.

Bob
