painting a stripe on a aluminum boat

am going to paint a stripe on new paint. is it necessary to rough up the area to be painted with the stripe and primed?

i would tape off on each side of the area to be stiped and wash it with acetone, that should be good unless your current paint has a gloss finish.If you have a gloss finsh then you will need to rough it up and wash with acetone it prior to striping.
I would do both either way
Do the best prep necessary as your stripe will last longer in the end

thanks for the tip! it's semi-gloss. i think i'll wait a couple of days for the paint to really dry and tape it up and roll it .

Will acetone not damage the rest of the paint?
