Painting Alternator

Is it safe to spray paint an alternator while it is assembled (wiring lugs covered) or should I disasseble it and just paint the case halves alone?

I'd just spray the case as you'd probably get spray fog inside which would could gum things up.

Yeah, honestly for the amount of work involved in taking off the case I don't even know why a I asked...... I'll pull it apart.
