I have white textured aluminum siding on my home. The south face is faded and worn from Ocean and sun exposure. Has anyone had success painting their siding? If so, prep? method? prime? type of paint?
Thanks!!

Re: Painting aluminum siding

If it's still painted then it needs to be washed (pressure) and just about any good enamel will stick to the older paint finish.

If you need to prime I would use a self etching type primer. What about Rustoleum which MANY MANY of us use on our aluminum boats

I have a house.. Aluminum siding, blue... With pink showing though... (you read it right)

The paint is faded and when you run your finger or hands on the siding there's a lot of chalky residue. That comes off. Can I paint over that. I have a large home, 2 story so scrub brushing is not something I wish to do.. Will pressure washing remove the chalkiness?

Re: Painting aluminum siding

I have three different conditions
1- faded and "chalky"
2- worn with gray primer peeking through
3- heavily worn with bare aluminum showing on the edges

Salt and fine windblown sand over 15 years of exposure have taken their toll.

I think I need to spot prime the bare spots and exposed/worn primer first before painting. Do you think a wagner power sprayer will be effective? Does anyone know specific paints for residential aluminum siding that have a good history?

Thanks

PS Thanks for the article tubin!

Go see your local Sherwin-Williams dealer. They have a acid wash to remove the chalk, it can be used in a pressure washer. They have a line of paints called DTM which is direct to metal. Its a industrial enamel. Good Stuff, it wears like iron. We did 26 carports in a apartment complex about 5 years ago and they still look like new. It is spray able but watch for over spray.

Father sided his home in 1970, 35 years later (2005), he had it painted.
They did a wash-etch-prime-paint.
The primer was almost clear.
The paint was applied magically, some sort of electrostatic process.

Start to finish, 2 days.
It still looks brand new, no runs, cracks and seams don't look painted over. Very nice.

I would suggest you contact a contractor, ask for estimates and what process they use. Then decide what method you want to use.
