Hi,
I have a 91 Bayliner Capri 17ft. The hull does not look bad (has some chips and dings, sun discoloring), but over all not bad. I would like to patch up the dings and repaint it. However I don't want to pay $200 for paint so I am wondering if possible to prep the hull sand it and paint with either oilbased or acrylic paint.

Also I want to paint the top side with oilbased, but not sure if it will stick to gel coat if I sand and prep properley.

Has anyone ever done any of these, is it possible.

Thank You very much guys, you are the best

A better idea is to wetsand and/or buff with compound to remove the oxidation and get a gelcoat patch kit for the chips and dings.

If you sand it I'm sure it will stick, but at uncatalyzed enamel paint is going to be nowhere near as durable as real gel coat.

So You are saying if I wet sand it and buff it really good it should be good as new?
what grid of sandpaper would you suggest?

Might want to take a stroll through the boat restoration area. This is a well discussed topic.

Grit depends on how bad. I'd start with 600, then 1000, 1500. I have used 400 when I am lazy or it's bad, but it will tend to leave more scratches. How many you can tolerate is up to you. But you'll be amazed how well it will clean up. Use lots of water, rinse often. Get a variable speed buffer and some rubbing compound (a thousand recommendations there, 3m is good but can be pricey).

Would that be oilbased paint then, like one you can get at ACE Hardware

My suggestion is to sand and buff a small area (1'x1') to see if it yields the results you desire, if it does then this is the best route. If not, then pick a paint of the quality you can afford and go for it.

What, nobody going to offer up the old "vaseline" remedy for this? Seriously,if you plan to paint it anyway, I would certainly try wet sanding and buffing out first. You might be pleasantly surprised.
