Hi fellows,
I have a 18 ft. fiberglass boat that needs painting . Does anyone have experience using the roll and tip method? Also is it better to use the two part type paints for durability? and are they harder to use then single mix paints? I am looking for a nice gloss white that can stand up to salt water use and look good for a few years. I will be painting in a garage. Are there any commercial painters that use roll and tip?

Bill

Re: painting fiberglass

Emron (sp) is about the strongest paint out there, this side of having the boat re-gelcoated. But it's way expensive. Paints requiring a catylist are not harder to use, you just have to use what you mix up and clean your equpment immediatly after use. Make sure the temp and humidity are within the parameters specified by the paint manufacturer. That might be a problem this time of year in NY.

Can't help you with tip and roll. sorry.

spots

A very good paint to use for that method is called Toplac.I think interlux makes it.It is a marine store item. You can also get pretty good results from an airless sprayer.I have done 2 boats that way but that was yeeeeeaaaaars ago.Toplac will self level so any method of painting will get good results.AS long as you follow the prep directions

There are many good one part type paints - Interlux and Petit Easypoxy - These are one part epoxy paints that work as good as 2 part. They are self leveling and easy to apply. You can roll, spray or bruch and they still come out great and are very durable. Just my 2 cents worth!

Handball,

I'm going to be painting my 21' Larson Commander in the very near future and decided to go with Interlux's 2 part "Perfection" It can be applied with a sprayer but was designed for the roll and tip method. Here is a link to Interlux's web site that has several videos showing the application process and the end result. It's pretty impressive. Also in the restoration forum, Tengals has some postings that show his before and after results.

Perfection by Interlux

Two-part marine paints are more durable and longer lasting than one-part paints, but they are more expensive. You can get good results with either using the roll and tip method.

Whatever brand you select, make sure your read the product literature fully. Each brand/paint product has different requirements. Follow them exactly unless you really know what you are doing. At a minimum, you should plan on using the required primer.

Interlux Perfection is excellent. This is a solvent based paint that is basically Awlgrip forumlated for roll and tip. Interlux and Awlgrip have the same parent company.

System Three makes a nice water based Two-part paint system that is excellent. The only negative is that the standard result is a semi-gloss finish.

The one-part paints from the major marine paint manufacturers are all good.
