painting fiberglass

I am new to the boating world and I was wondering on what is the best way to paint my old boat. Should I clean it with anoxidizer/cleaner or ? Please help. Thanks all

wjs3<br /><br />Wash it first then give it a good sanding and then wash it down with a fiberglass prep or something like that. The sanding will "rough up" the smooth gel coat to give the new paint something to grip. I used 150 grit and a vibrator on mine. I used Interlux's primer then Brightside Poly and was pleased with results. Check their website for info. web page

The hardest part is surface preparation-and the most critical to any recoating job as well as the most time consuming.<br /> Check out ''HYDROSTRIP''by ICI or the manufacturor,www.napierenvironmental.com for a list of distributors.The stripper works on 2 part epoxies, won't damage gel coats, is water,as opposed to solvent based, is non toxic, no fumes and won't burnyour skin.Spray it on, leave it overnight and power wash it off. Beats sanding.
