I am thinking about painting the sides only on my 189T Blue Wave bay boat. The sides have a clearly taped off area that is blue, and the hull bottom is light grey.

There are a few nicks/scrapes/scratches in it from rubbing against docks, oil rigs, etc..
A few of them are deep enough to where they are through the paint, and the glass is showing (however, they dont leak).

What would be the best thing to fill these with before I go ahead and paint the sides?

Also, the sides of the boat are low impact, and dont need a really thick paint on them. I was thinking about taping off the area I wanted to paint and spraying some DuPont Base/Clear on it, or maybe Centari or Imron. What would be recommended?

Thanks for any help/tips.

Shawn

For the nick & stuff Marine Tex is the absolute best. It is a two part product and is as hard as steel when cured.

Marine tex is great stuff when used where it won't be seen but if you were to gel coat over it the gel won't hold good.
Best bet is to gel coat and then sand out especially if you think of resale. May be a little more work but worth it.

FlyRod,

I know that an automotive paint will shine as good or better then gel coat.

Gel Coat is a bit too much work...

Will the automotive paint hold up?

phatman,

you being in florida and all...you can probably attest to this.

First, Does your car have a basecoat/clearcoat paint job? Does it still shine after 8hrs of constant rain wen one of those little tropical storms blows thru? If not, you need to take it back to the dealer.

Put a car with base/clear in the weather/sun for 6yrs, untouched, vs. a gelcoat in the weather/sun for 6yrs, untouched, and I assure you the base/clear on that car will look a lot better then the gelcoat on the boat. The base/clear has better UV protection then the gelcoat, and it is a lot easier to 'bring back' the shine if it does go dull.

My main concern is how it will do with usual boat wear/tear like boat docks, sand when beaching it, etc..

There are a few guys I've found since I posted this who used base/clear on their boat, and it turned out like new, and has lasted them. One guy has had it on their for 6yrs and only has a few small areas of imperfection (on the bottom side) due to fishing in stumps and trees.

Do you have any info to back up your claim that it wont hold up? I'm curious, just saying 'no' isn't enough.

Thanks!
Shawn

I forgot to mention that the boat is stored out of the water, not in the water. I would never consider leaving the boat in the water with this paint.

But, it will hold up to the water after 8hrs of use in a day, and then being pulled out, air dried, and the cleaned.

Just thought I'd clear that up!

Shawn

Personaly I have "never" seen a properly applied urethane basecoat clearcoat fail either obove waterline or below waterline! And I have seen lots of Gelcoat failures, even new! The key is properly applied! PREPORATION IS THE KEY! I know it is not recomended, but I think the paint manufacturers say that to cover there bu**s!

LubeDude,

The people I have talked to that have it done are 100% happy with it. They say it's easier to maintain, it's glossier then new, and it is cheaper/easier to do.

I found a guy near me in Austin, TX that does nothing but Paint boats and restore them, as well as re-floor and install stringers, transoms, etc...

If you think about it, all of those $300,000 Cigar Boats and what not with the designs on the side...those are custom painted, usually with automotive paint. That's what the guy in Austin does a lot of. He said the main problem he has is when people spill gass on it, which is typical.

I'm going to give it a shot eventually, just the hull sides first to see how it is. I'll post up when I do.

Take care
Shawn
