Hey guys,
well I am new to this forum and was hoping to get some advice by some of you fellow DIY'ers out there. I am going to paint my fiberglass john boat and need some direction. To start, this isn't my first time attempting this. The first try was done with an automotive paint and looked great for about 6 months but then these cracks started to form and they got worse and worse. Well next season someone tells me "no boy you can't use auto paint, you got to use epoxy paint and roll it on". So, I buy expoxy paint and roll it on. Guess what happens in 5 months......you guessed it, the paint did the same exact thing and looks horrible. I prepped the boat both times before painting by sanding down with a rough then medium and then fine sand paper and along with any body work that needed to be done. I just recently got some advice from someone I trust that says I need to apply a prep solvent before I start sanding the boat because he thinks what happened last time is that I sanded in all the gunk that can accumulate on the paint over the months. I am just wondering if this is some of my problem and if any of you have ever taken on painting a fiberglass boat, how did it work for you and what did you use. I would really appreciate any help anyone here can give me.
Thanks a bunch!

Ayuh,... I paint glass boats all the time, with automotive paints... 2-pt urethanes...

I prep with 240gt. sanding, priming, sand with 320gt., then shoot the top coat...

My 1st Guess is, the hull is Flexing badly,...
Or,..
Maybe you sanded with to Fine a grit,... Gotta have abit of tooth to grip the paint...

Washing with soap,+ water, Before you start,+ after each sanding step is required...
