I need some painting advice. I have a 1986 Gibson 50'. It has a few old faded blue stripes going all the way around it and as well just below the rub rail. I got a quote on someone locally painting it and the quote was $8000.00... that is totally out of the question. I want to paint it myself. How do I prep the surface? Does it matter if its oil or water base coat on it now? Do I use oil or water base? Can I brush it on? Any specific brand? Enamel? I want it to be shiny as possible. I really really want to get this done ASAP. thank you in advance.

Sooo, they quoted $8,000 for stripes??? How many are there? What size? Are you sure they're Painted stripes and not vinyl decals? Rustoleum Oil Based Pro Paint is inexpensive, and when combined with Acrylic Enamel Hardener will yield a High Gloss and very durable paint. You can spray or Roll n' Roll it to get a Professional looking finish. the Green FROG tape will yield good crisp non Bleed lines. Unless the Stripes are huge you should easily be able to paint a 5" wide stripe of 150ft with a quart or two of paint. Less than $50 bucks for sure. Clean the surface with TSP, then sand with 100 grit and then 180. Final wash down with Acetone and then tape and apply the paint. From start to finish Maybe 2 days. depending on how hard you go at it.

Yes it was 8000.00 just to paint the strips. I have attached a copy of the invoice. I also included a pic of the boat. It is a 50 foot Gibson Houseboat. Woodonglass I have a question, how much Enamel hardener to mix with the Oil Based Paint, what is the Ratio? And Do I brush on the paint? thank you very much test...PNG

That seems like "we don't really want to do this" pricing right there.

I prefer the roll-and-roll method to put down that paint. Roll it on with a foam roller and then roll over it again very lightly to knock down the bubbles. I painted my boat like that and it came out looking almost sprayed.
