Have a 1972 28' Luhrs..Chrysler 318 with a Paragon V Drive, pictured here. I have transmission fluid coming out the exhaust at the stern. The Fluid does not appear to be INSIDE the tranny/drive as it looks clean. It only seems to be coming out. I have not run the boat at all this year. We drove to the slip and it sat there all summer. Now when I started it up to bring it to the dock this is coming out like crazy. I dumped a quart in and it came out in about 10 minutes. Does anyone know all the points it could be getting in to the exhaust system? Any parts references online somewhere? Exploded views?

Thanks!

Just to the left of the battery, I see what looks like a heat exchanger.
(larger hose turning down into a blue cylinder, with 2 smaller hoses/brass fittings)
If that's what it is, and it's leaking, that will introduce oil into the coolant water, which will eventually be expelled from the exhaust pipes.

My tranny is cooled with raw water on my 318. My understanding is that the tranny fluid produces more pressure than the raw water and will leak thru the tranny cooler..... into the raw water.... and thus exit the exhaust. Sitting at the dock and then having this problem would indicate to me the tranny cooler is not bonded or have a functioning zinc if equipped. Hope you find your problem is an easy fix.

PS....what wire2 said....

The tranny has an inline cooler. It could be the weak point.Where did you add oil?The V-drive or the trans?J

I was thinking the cooler could be the issue. I added fluid to the tranny, not the Vdrive...I didnt see an easy place to check the Vdrive fluid but I didnt spend a whole lot of time either..I will have to get to it this weekend. Thanks for the quick replies..do you know where I can get a replacement heat exchanger? That would certainly be a simple enough thing to try first...
