Captains Charter Boat License

Their are two basic types of Coast Guard license:

1. A OUVP License, (Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel) More commonly referred to as "6-PACK" License.

2. A Master License, which covers both inspected and un- inspected passenger vessels for hire.

Basic Requirements: To obtain either license one must have certain level of boating experience and take a written exam. The majority of individuals attend specialty schools which can prepare you for the exam. The actual exam covers the practical aspects of boating, including Rules of the Road, Radio Operation, Distress Signaling, Boating Terminology, Boat Equipment, Use of Flares, Use of Life Jackets, Techniques of Seamanship, Anchoring, Aids to Navigation, Boat Registration, Navigation, Knot Tying, Firefighting and more.

Parasail operator experience is not required. Only Sea Time is used to calculate and determine the type of license that can be obtained. Sea Time is a term that describes the number of days operating a motorboat on the water. The Size, Power, Type and Ownership of the boat is not pertinent to obtain a license. The actual Sea Time is counted from your 15th Birthday. For all licenses, 90 Days of your Sea Time must be in the last 3 years

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TYPES OF LICENSES AND REQUIREMENTS
OUPV (6-Pack) Inland

*For uninspected, 6 passenger vessels on inland waters.
*Requires 360 days total boating experience.
*90 of those days must be in the last 3 years.
*No offshore time is needed
*U.S. citizenship is not required.
*Minimum age is 18.

OUPV (6-Pack) Near Coastal

*For uninspected,6 passenger vessels, inland / offshore up to 100 miles.
*Requires 360 days total boating experience.
*90 of those days must be in the last 3 years.
*90 days, in any time frame, must be in Near Coastal waters (offshore).
*U.S. citizenship is not required.
*Minimum age is 18.

MASTER Inland (25, 50 OR 100 GROSS TONS)
*For inspected or uninspected vessels inland.
*360 days total time (same as the 6-pack).
*Requires 90 of those days in the last 3 years.
*U.S. citizenship is required.
*Minimum age is 19.

MASTER Near Coastal (25, 50 OR 100 GROSS TONS)
*For inspected and uninspected vessels inland/offshore up to 200 miles.
*You need to show 720 days total time.
*90 of those days must be in the last 3 years.
*360 days in Near coastal waters (offshore).
*U.S. citizenship required.
*Minimum age is 19.

LAUNCH OPERATOR
OUPV Limited
*For uninspected launches carrying 6 or fewer passengers.
*You need 90 days of experience on a boat.
*Minimum age is 17.

MASTER Inland Limited

*For Inspected and Uninspected launches.
*You need 120 days experience on a boat..
*Minimum age is 18.

Captian School Locator

Other Links
