My husband is having problems with
'93 yamaha 85 hp.....he's pretty sure it's the gas mixture although it is 50:1, it's running rough. I think it's because it wasn't mixed in a separate container....it was put in at the gas station (oil, gas, oil, gas)
does that matter, and does that cause excess bluish smoke?
and does the brand of marine oil matter?

Re: Pardon my ignorance

what can happen is the oil wont properly mix with the gas that way.
you may have a very rich oil mix.
sometimes the oil will sit at the bottom and the fuel pickup will draw mostly oil.
pre mixing is a pain but it must be done correctly and adding oil directly to the fuel tank usually leads to heartaches.

Thanks for your quick response, Rodbolt.

Also, what brand of oil do you recommend?

I doubt that fuel mix is your problem, Misty. If you poured it at the gas station it should have been well mixed before you got to the ramp.

"Rough" is a pretty subjective term. Could you be more specific?

Yes, unless the boat was filled with gas and oil while in the water sitting dead still and then started I think your gas and oil is mixed plenty. I fill up with gas and then add appropriate amount of oil at the pump. I am sure with all the bouncing on the way to the ramp, or home and to the ramp the next time it gets plenty of sloshing and mixing.

What brand of oil is your husband using? What kind of gas tank is he using? The Yamaha factory gas containers are actually a Metric measurement and he may not be using the correct amount of oil. Have you tried using a different gas tank?

What does that have to do with anything ??? You put in X amount of gallons from the pump and then the proper amount of oil for that many gallons. I don't really see what difference the marks on the gas can would make.

Re: Pardon my ignorance

Here is something from the Yamaha Technical Guide.
When the engine exhaust smoke is too thick at idle, check the following:
Quality of oil being used.
Leaking fuel pump diaphragm.
Leaking exhaust gaskets.
Carburetor synchronization and idle fuel adjustment.

The reason I asked what type oil was being used is because Yamaha mentions that as a cause of excessive smoke.
