Anybody have any experience with Parsun outboards - buying, using, servicing, dealers etc?

I know they are made in China and are pretty inexpensive but that is about it.

Sounds like a real crap shoot to me.Doesn't seem to me that selling over the internet is the way to establish a strong dealer network.
I would be taking my money and buy a motor that has a well established dealer down the road. And a vast supply of parts at places like Iboats.

It certainly appears that there are no US dealers or service centers, so what good is the warranty. I also can't seem to find anything about conforming to US environmental standards.

They are cheap initially but at what price in the long run! Even if they are the best built motors on the market (which there are not), without a dealer and support network they are pretty much useless.

Maybe in time they may grow into the market (like Hyundai did in the car market) but for now I think I will steer clear.

Search for them on youtube and listen to them run. If you were thinking about buying one before, you won't after you hear it running.

The latest information that we have on them is that 2 models now have EPA approval, a 5 and a 15. However, the rest are not approved and since there are no dealers in the U.S that we know of, it would be a gamble to get one. As to their quality, reports run from "use it until it breaks and buy another one" to "wouldn't start and now I'm screwed". There are apparently two of these Chinese outboard company's out there that are selling or have sold under around eight different names. I don't know know of anyone dumb enough to have purchased one here in the U.S., but I'm sure some of the non EPA approved ones were illegally shipped here from the Canadian distributor. International reports on the Parsun named engines indicate that they seem to be a little primitive, but give similar performance to current production outboards in all the brands. The main problem I see is warranty enforcement as you would have to ship the engine back to Canada at your expense to have a warranty repair done...And how do you know if they will really honor it? I can say that the people involved in the distibution chain for this these engines are not above doing immoral and illegal acts...I can say that based on personal expierence.
