the parts motor i just bought has EVERYTHING ----including control box, control cables , and battery cables.

the guy said he thought the prop shaft was bent------he didnt elaborate as to why he thought this.

i couldnt find my dial indicator so i used a digital micrometer---- i put one end against the adjustable trim tab----then i put the end inside of the prop shaft hole----while my sun turned it i took measurements : it moved like .04063 inch in one revolution.

is this acceptable or is this not an accurate enough test?............you can turn the drive shaft and watch the prop shaft and cannot see any warpage with the eye........adn the prop isnt in that bad of shape heres the prop

i dont see anything that looks like it hit hard enough to bend a prop shaft

Re: part motor ??

ere are some pics of the motor he said was locked up before he got it..........no i didnt tear it apart, he did.

he said he thought the crank needed replaced but im not so sure...........and im not so sure it was truly locked up......the center main bearing does have some scoring on both pieces of the block and the rod journals have some blueing from heat.

do these look like a steam cleaning or a no oil.........the rest of the motor looks pretty clean for a 2 stroke ('79)........but it did have weisco stickers on the cowling...maybe it was a fairly new refresh before the prob.

any thoughts about what caused the failure?

this looks to me like a fresh rebuild and had water intrusion causing steam cleaning..........or no oil----every thing looks too clean for a 2 stroke to me......well the exhaust ports are pretty nasty.

it only hs 2 serious imperfections.............but these to me dont look bad enough to bend the prop shaft.

he said he thought it was bent......but he didnt elaborate....and i was checking out the tnt at the time.

i still cant find my dial indicator .............but i did "try" to get a reading using my micrometer. best i could tell in 1 revolution it moved .04063"------i tried this by putting one end on the lu at the trim tab - then i put the other end in the hole at the end of the prop shaft - while mt son turned the drive shaft (with lu in a vise) i kept rubbing the adjustment wheel (on mic) to make sure it stayed tight to the one side.

is this accurate enough?........is it within specs?......my manual has had an unfortunate encounter with my lab/pit pup..............all i have left is the table balancer (seloc) and it doesnt come close to having all the info im used to.

should i just break down and buy another dial indicator...........the tool truck wont be in town for another couple of days.

Re: part motor ??

the pics dont look any different to me are they right this time?

sorry i have a 17" screen and have now switched to firefox, so everything fits on my screen.

and by the way i dont intend to use the power head right away ...........

the guy said it was locked up when he got it and the prop shaft was bent.
then he says he took it apart and decided it was cheeper to buy a eng in running condition, and that the crank had scoring and some pitting. he said he couldnt find any one in his area willing to weld and grind the crank, and the new one was like $1100.

so before i saw it i was thinking that the previous owner had hit something--bending the prop shaft-- and this in turn carried through the drive shaft and knocked out the center main..................now im not so sure, and i think the power head was something all together different.

i really want the lower unit to be good.............my skeg is bent pretty bad and is about 4" shorter than my prop.

Re: part motor ??

apparently my idea for using a mic to measure trueness wasnt so hot.........should have used a dial indicator.

i installed it on my motor and when i spun the prop by hand it wobbled about 1/4 inch.......maybe more.

as for the rest of the pieces----i have 2 of everything :D.
