Partial transom replacement/repair

I don't have pictures yet, but if the center section of the transom is the only bad area (rot), and the center top edge, can a partial replacement be done and be structurally sound?

The top center about 20" long is splitting along the top edge on the transom, and the center section below that (where the outboard bolts on, of course) is soft. The rest of the transom, based on plastic mallet tapping, appears solid.

My question is if I cut into the transom and confirm no additional rot, can I repair only in the center part (about 24" at the top, and down about 12", can I just glass in a laminated marine ply repair after cutting out the soft wood? Would this be as strong as a complete core replacement of the transom wood, top to bottom?

thanks

Re: Partial transom replacement/repair

Short answer.....NO

Just pull the old one, use it for a template.
It needs to be one piece (2 pieces laminated together) to be strong enough.

Re: Partial transom replacement/repair

That's kinda what I expected. I was trying to find a fix that might be a lot less work, but just as strong, and usually, "you get what you pay for", so a shortcut on something like a bad transom is not really a real smart idea.

thanks
