Ok have a thought and the thought may well be completely wrong. Or I may be as they say all wet....

1984 17' Galaxy bowrider. Floor was rotted and from all I can tell the stringers are solid.
Transom is rotted from one third of the way up the cutout for the outdrive to the bottom. The rest of it checks OK, drilled test holes and checked what can be seen around the transom cutout and this appears to be the only damage.

Now the question:

Can one replace the damaged portion only (a horizontal "splice") and still end up with a solid and safe result? I am all for saving time and money but won't settle for a transom that is only 60% (a randomly chosen number) as strong as it could/should be.

If this can successfully be done is plywood or seacast or some other material the way to go?

As always all help and comments are appreciated.

i agree with the above....

however.....if you just want to replace the rot....you can....once encpasulated with glass....it will be strong.....

beware.....water and rot are a tricky thing...you may not know the total extent of the intrusion.

cheers

60% will end up 100%, once you open it up, and see it.

Re: Partial transom replacement????????

Ok, I give up! You all can say I told you so.....

When I drilled I was looking for "wet". Found no wet so my confidence was raised. ;) What I failed to notice was that there was nothing (no material) coming back in the drill flutes. oy Cut into the transom to get a look at what I knew I "had" to replace and was greeted by VERY dry parchment. Really had little semblance of plywood. Darnedest stuff. Only about top 20% of the material was intact. Some of the best material left was around the top 2/3 of the transom cutout? I'd have thought that would have been the first to go...

Regardless am now committed to redoing the transom and the associated mess. Have started the removal and grinding ritual. Such fun!! Found that the forward motor mount is also junk and the only thing the lags are fastened to is the glass over the top. :(

Will start a new post to get some more questions answered about that.

Thanks for everyones comments and I am sure further help.
