I am looking at a Hurrican Katrina boat that has a 2003 Yamaha 225 HP-four stroke. The boat took on waves that washed over the back of the boat. I have no idea if the engine was submerged or partially submerged. After sitting for 3 months the flywheel can be turned by hand. I am going to try and have the engine started. If the engine runs am I free and clear or will the engine still need an overhaul. Any idea on costs for an overhaul and how do the four strokes hold up - since they have oil in the crankcase?

the cost of overhauling is prohibitive, they are mostly throw away powerheads. if the compression is good have a look at the valve springs and camshafts and the timing chain. if all are rust free go for it.

Ain't that the truth Rodbolt. Even if salt water got into the electronics, you're still looking at several thousand dollars.
