I'm considering buying a 1965 Johnson 9.9 hp outboard. What are the pitfalls of this purchase? Are parts still available, etc.?

The 9.9 didn't come out until 1974, do you mean a 9.5? That was built from '64 to '73. If so, common tune up parts are available, but the specialty parts would be harder to get. At one time the 9.5 was the best selling fishing motor in the world, so used parts may be easier to get.

Didn't know these facts; thanks a ton. I'll double check the year. Assuming it is the 9.5, do you see any particular problems with this outboard? What specifics should I check? If it is a later model (the 9.9), what about parts, etc.? I appreciate your input.

I think they are a good motor but I think the suspension bushings(?) some times fail and are difficult to replace and hard to find, also I think you have to remove the powerhead to pull the carb.Hopefully some one with a better memory can help as its just a vague recollection right
now.

One other thing. I don't want to "skin" anyone but what would be a good purchase price for a Johnson 9.5 or 9.9 outboard?

Powerhead removal not required for a 9.5 (or 9.9 for that matter) carb removal. Just make sure that if you're buying it as a runner, that you have it fired up in a barrel and check forward/reverse while it's running. That'll tell you about the suspension mounts. If it's a 9.5, average cosmetics, good running condition-$350 max. Not running condition, I wouldn't go over $100, and I'd want a tank/hose at that (and I'd test compression first.. 'shake' powerhead to check mounts.. manually shift FNR.. check lower unit lube condition etc.). Good luck!
