Because of a shot piston, I'm considering a rebuild of my 1974 135 Evinrude. Since I'll have it apart would it be wise to replace all pistons or just the bad one? Compression is between 130-135 in the other 3 cylinders. Also should I replace the bearings etc?

Also where is the best place to order these parts? Should I go through my local Evinrude dealer?

Thanks in advance,

Greg Hodges

Greg...I have seen and done many a partial rebuild replacing only the defective piston and rings...Look at the other cylinders carefuly and replace rings and hone cylinders if you have any doubt...I might replace top and bottom crankshaft bearings and look closely at rod bearings and pins. Replace all seals and gaskets...thermostats. To answer your question it is quite normal to only replace the defective piston...and find out and fix the problem that caused the piston failure...just a Thought

Fivestar..... Replace only those pistons that are damaged, but do replace all of the piston rings. Inspect all of the bearings and if they look like new, reuse them. If a bearing has turned blue in color or is obviously damaged, replace it.

You can of course obtain what you need at a dealership, but keep in mind that many of us (retired) still have parts left in our remaining stock. A notice here, or to our e-mail address could save you some $$$$. Just let us know what the part(s) are. Something to keep in mind. (ReevesJ32@aol.com)

After you inspect the pistons as mentioned your machine shop will measure the cylinders to determine wear. Between the piston and the cylinder size you will know what to bore and what to just hone.

Also make darn sure you have a 1974 and not a 1973 powerhead. They are very different but both will bolt up to a 1974 mid section. Either can be rebuilt easily -- its the parts that are different.

Good luck!

I have just had my 1989 Evinrude 140 rebuilt. I shed a ring and scored the bore.

OMC mechs advised and replaced one piston and rebored one oversize cylinder and replaced all other rings and bearings at the same time.

If you have it apart it is certainly worth the expense to renew all moving parts. I wouold also replace water pump and get a pressure gauge fitted too. This is something I regretted not doing at the same time.

Long saga getting it tuned later but mechanically it sounds nice.

NG
