Parts interchange

I have a 1966 9.5 sportwin.
Most of the parts suppliers seem to only go back to 1968.
Are these parts the same and interchangable?
Do they use the same parts #'s?
I need a new "main spring" for the pull starter.
Thanks,
Kyle

Re: Parts interchange

I am not sure about the parts numbers, but I have switched many parts between the years on the johnson/evinrude 9.5's, including the starter spring and pinion gears. As far as getting one, ya might get one cheaper and have better results with ebay or the aomci postings. A new spring is gonna be pricey. Also get a manual, that spring requires taking out the pin, and screwing down the spring 20.5 turns. There's a whole procedure that isn't all that fun to do.

Re: Parts interchange

Nearly all the parts are the same between '66 and '68. I don't have the '66 parts book, but I'd be willing to gamble that the recoil is the same. If the parts are the same, the part numbers will be the same.

Re: Parts interchange

Thanks folks,
That's what I suspected.
I have the manuel and tried to recoil my cord a couple of weeks ago. I over did it apparently because I broke the upper spring retainer Pin and the end of the spring is sprung. :) I've replaced the upper spring retainer pin. That's when I realized that the spring is also out of wack.

When the book says 20.5 turns. Does that mean complete rotations or just turns of the screw driver? This is where i screwed up last time.
I'm using a rather large screw driver for this.

Thanks,
Kyle

Re: Parts interchange

That is 20 1/2 complete turns of the screwdriver, which is same as saying 20 1/2 turns of the spool. Then stick a pair of pliers under the pinion to lock it. Then install the rope.
