I'm pretty new to working on vintage motors. I just picked up a 1957 Johnson 35 golden javelin and found packing for low speed needle is missing and high speed needle packing needs replaced. Is there a recommended source for packing nuts and some gaskets i need? What purpose does the packing have? Thanks.

Re: parts suppliers

The nut around the needle valve compresses the packing around the needle causing a friction lock on the needle so it woun't vibrate out of spec. I am not sure about the after market, you might have to go to a dealer to get just the packing. I think that they come in a rebuild kit, OEM or after market.

Rebuild kits and/or packings right here at iboats. No problem

I don't think you get the actual nut, just the packing. Looks like a fiber washer. I think you have to reuse the nut. Might be wrong.

That was convenient:). This looks like the kit i need, it should include the packing nuts too right? I never seen a packing nut, if i'm correct it's like a fiber washer.

That's the kit. It will have several parts in it that do not apply to your carburetor, so don't worry about finding a place for everything.

Packing "nuts" are the brass nuts. You re-use them. It is the packings themselves that you replace.
