I am looking for different ways to make My PB for my current restoration. I have read a couple places on what they use just curious what others are using. I am looking for a cost effective method but strong.

What do you have?

Re: PB Recipes

Not talc

You can cut your own 1/4" cut strand out of scrap pieces of fiberglass CSM/1708 to make hairy PB (for structural applications)

Re: PB Recipes

A lot depends on the application and the type of boat. For fiberglass boats and repairs below the waterline, I'd recommend, 1 qt resin, 1 qt Cabosil, 1/4 cup 1/4" chopped milled fibers, mix to the consistency of Peanut Butter. Add more or less cabosil till you get it like you want it, add the appropriate amount of MEKP for 1 quart of resin. Stir well for 30 - 45 secs. 15-20 minutes working time depending on temps. If its HOT place it on ice in an ice chest to "Fool" the resin into thinking it's cold outside. Don't apply when temps are under 60? F. There are other fillers but...you don't want to use anything that could absorb water, especially if the repair is below the waterline.

Re: PB Recipes

Its an application to application thing

PB is a term for "filler" .. you could be filling for glass..or fairing.

What are you trying to do with your "PB" ?

Re: PB Recipes

hmm, this quote was supposed to be in my previous post:
So I came up with this supplies list, if anyone has some input or recommendations let me know.

20 yards 1.5 csm
16 yards 1708
10 gallons Resin
1/4 chop strand
talc
bubble buster

My problem is not knowing how much talc and 1/4 chop strand to get for the PB Mix. Anyone got an idea on that.

Second Question would be, would you recommend PL or PB to attach the the transom to the hull? And what is the right PL to use? I have PL375 left from a basement project.

For this:
So I think I am ready to start glassing in the stringers and the the transom and fix the holes that I put in the hull. Does anyone have an Idea of how much Fiberglass I should start with. I do not have enough Money to buy everything at one time so I would like to get enough to at least get me started.

Stringers:
3/4"w x 7.5"h x 6.5'l
3/4" x 4" x 12'
1.5" x 1" x 10"

Transom: 1.5" x 17" x 81"

3 Bulkheads: 3/4" x 15" x 28"

What I would really like is enough to get it tabbed in enough to have everything in place and strong enough to be able to flip it. This includes enough stuff to make PB as well.

budget for first purchase is $150. I know I should wait and purchase everything at the same time, but I am ready to start glassing.

Not sure why it didn't attach...

But the $150 limit may be a challenge (especially including freight) unless you've got a local supplier that will sell you small quantities from their bulk supply at an extremely reasonable rate.

Re: PB Recipes

Yeah I guess I kinda failed, I am looking for both I guess. I will be doing both so I will need them. I will not use talc. I have been told on several occasions not to use this. I figured that most people put there recipes in there threads and they are hard to find (I have read GT1m's thread 3 times just to find his). It would be kinda nice just to get several different options that we can find in one thread.

Like what do I use when I put a hole in my hull?

What type would you use to attach the Transom to the Hull?

What do you use to attach the stringers to the hull?

Stuff like that.

Re: PB Recipes

For strength situations, I used resin mixed with Cabosil till I got the consistancy I wanted...then added 1/4" CSM...enough to get a good distribution. I mixed the 1/4" fibers in by hand...almost like folding in baking terms...only once did I use power mixing and was not happy with the outcome...others may like it that way, but I didn't turned into a giant cottenball looking mess....my 2 cents....

Stuff like that.

For stuff like that ... All you need is resin/cabosil/microballoons/csm.

With those 3 components you can make a small repair or Fair out something on the outside with something stronger.

There is no Complete rule of thumb to suggest that you cant mix some Cabosil with Micro B's. This gives you a better Fairing compound on the bottom where fairing might be extensive.

I choose All Glass when doing bottom repairs .. I choose Cabosil and chopped glass when fairing below the waterline ( I use a sureform at just the right time for both of these applications to cut down on dust ).

I choose more 50/50 cabosil/micro for larger fairing below the waterline repairs. I would coat them with VE resin before gelcoat.

If your building a plug .. then more Micro Bs' would be used in your mix.

If your placing Stringers or Bulkies on the hull then micro Bs would be better then Cabosil.

Hope this helps...
