I have a 2001 Mercury XR6 150 which is hard to start when cold.
When warm, it starts up usually on the first try.
I have found this to be the case from my first start with the boat, but I've been learning how to start it over the years, and I'm still learning.
I've read alot of posts here and I still have some questions.

1) I think my engine has a primer solenoid which is activated by pressing the ignition key in (Right so far?)

2) I'm not clear on the proper use of the primer solenoid.
a) Do I press and hold for a 8-10 count? Or do I press it 8 to 10 times? My mechanic said to do the latter, and claims he got it to start right up.

b) Do I keep the key pressed in when turning the key to crank the engine?
This is a new one to me, but the post at:
http://www.outboardrepairs.com/topics/008500.html refers to doing this (but it may not apply to my engine)

3) What's the proper use of the throttle when starting cold. Disengage the drive gear, but then th

4) Can I be flooding the engine during a repeated start attempts, or otherwise creating a situation which actually makes it more difficult for me to start the engine? i.e. Is there something I should be careful to avoid? (Other than the normal safety precautions and draining the battery)

Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks
