Pedometer..................

Hate to admit it, but I was inspired by the Today Show.

I always thought it would be interesting to see how many steps a guy takes on a daily basis. And how far those steps actually take you.

So I'm thinking about buying. My main goal is accuracy of the unit with spending as little as possible. I came across this unit:
Amazon.com: Fitbit Zip Wireless Activity Tracker, Charcoal: Health & Personal Care

For the life of me I don't know how it works if you can clip it on your pocket. How can it count steps?

All it does is count steps, distance and calories burned. It also auto syncs to the computer and makes funky charts to track your progress. Those features is fine for me, the average recliner potato.

Anybody have that unit, or, other recommendations?

Thanks!

Re: Pedometer..................

I have been using a free pedometer app in my phone for a few years now. It works well, and gives me an idea of how many calories I burn daily. You can get reasonably priced clip on pedometers at wally world in the health fitness dept.

Re: Pedometer..................

I have a cheapo flip phone. I don't do apps............

My biggest concern about clip-ons at Wally World would be the accuracy. The research I have done I'm finding out not all pedometers are created equal.........

I'm assuming there are a fair amount of health conscience members here, I'm just "trying" to be one of them.........:)

Wife has been using all kinds of ped's and none work for very long and are not accurate IMO. She has not tried that one, but as Cofe mentioned she started using an app and all is good.

I used to use a pedometer to record my walks. It was only accurate when I could predict my length of stride.

My experience, as well. I finally started walking measured distances. But sometimes I really stride and other times just mosey about. It really isn't about burning calories, it's all about getting exercise in my opinion.

Re: Pedometer..................

Exercise is my main goal, don't really have to worry about burning calories. Just would be interesting how many steps a person takes on a normal day. Lately, that number would be very low........ Walking around the house compared to going for a walk would probably calculate different as mentioned..... Made 3 trips to my deer stand and back yesterday. Getting ready for next weekend...

We have had some of the $12 models from that sports stores (don't remember the brand) . They were pretty accurate, IME.

for $60 with a 4.5 star rating, I'd consider the model you looking at. In fact I might put it one my own xmas list.

my job started a fitness campaign last spring and everyone who signed up and did all the "steps" got a fitbit zip. I have over a million steps sense I started my boss is an over achiever and has close to 4 million. They are pretty neat for all they do. you can keep track of your progress on their website.

Re: Pedometer..................

I know several people that use a fitbit. They seem happy with them. Calories burned is just a estimate tho. The big difference is like your cell phone the fitbit uses accelerometers instead of the old and cheaper pendulum system of many pedometers. It guesses calories by your steps.

Another option is a bodybug. You wear it as a arm band, besides tracking steps
It senses temp and perspiration to give a better track of your activity, and actual calories deficit.

My problem with most pedometers is they count steps as I'm bouncing around in my truck driving down the road, one good rough road and I'm ahead by 300-500 steps.
