1985 85 Johnson has no pee hose/hole. I don't want to drill the block so can I split the thomostat hose and put a tee in it and down size to a 1/8 or some thing like that. I don't trust the over heat light.

Look near the #1 cylinder.------------There may be a plug or location for a plug for a pee hose installation.

The telltale came out with the 1978 models. An 85 should have a telltale hose barb plumbed into the outer exhaust cover. If there is none, the engine may be older than you think. If it's a 77 or older, why not just scrounge around for a replacement/used outer exhaust cover and replace it. There have to be many, many of these leftover covers in marine salvage yards. Try Outboard Recyclers of Wilmington. They advertise a lot on ebay.
