Peel-n-stick tile.....

I laid some peel and stick tile in a portable building I use as a hunting camp house. This past spring the house flooded with about 3 to four inches of bayou water. The tile curled up along the edges so I scaped it all up with a straight hoe. The tile left a sticky residue on the floor and I'm not sure if it will need to be gotten up before i lay some new tile down. If so, do any of you know what would be the best thing to use to get the residue up? The floor of the house is plywood.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

I had a similar mess when I removed carpet tile from a concrete slab floor. It left a sticky adhesive that would almost pull your shoes off when you walked on it.

Klean-Strip Adhesive Remover took it off. I bought it at Home Depot along with a 4" razor scraper.

If you don't get it all up the minor difference in height on the subfloor will show through the new tile.

You can try mineral spirits, brush and roller cleaner, xylene(that will be over kill) or a stripper(liquid)

^^^ Yup i agree about the mineral spirits.

If you have some mineral spirits sitting around try that first. It worked for me somewhat but not very plus I had quite a large area to strip. It left an oily residue too. Mineral spirits doesn't have fumes like other strong solvents. I'd stay away from those.

BTW, the stuff I recommended worked really well on the sticky stuff I had. The adhesive was very sticky and rubbery. It had a greenish tint to it. I would say if mineral spirits does a so so job then the adhesive remover will work great. If the mineral spirits does nothing at all then the stripper probably wont either. If that's the case, the adhesive may be water based. In that case boiling water should loosen it up.

I finished up by spreading some cat litter and then sweeping that up. You'll want to scrub it pretty clean to give the new adhesive something to grab to.

In home remodeling I think we would put down a new 1/4 inch subfloor to make sure we get good adhesion. Less cleanup, More material cost, better final install. Not sure how big your building is.

How about some pics? Before and after.:)

Re: Peel-n-stick tile.....

Just so yall will know......the tile was not some high end, high quality tile. I got it at Fred's Dollar Store ! It was cheap cheap cheap and did exactly what I wanted. I'm hoping the adhesive will be poor quality stuff and come up fairly easily. I have not been back to the house and checked it since its had time to dry out. After I scraped the tile up the floor was still pretty wet and its been a month and dryer than a Snuff Makers Butt here so I'm hoping the floor is dry and I can see what i'm going to be up against.

With the house having a ply wood floor I'm a little leary of using too strong of a solvent.
